Absurdity

What I ask for is absurd: that life shall have meaning.
What I strive for is impossible: that life shall acquire a meaning.
I dare not believe, I do no see how shall I ever be able to believe: that I am not alone.

Dag Hammarskjöld

What makes something, someone absurd? And does it really matter that it is absurd?

We are all in pursuit of something. A direction, a path, a spore we have been sniffing and keep circling about, and we feel we have to pursue it, follow its trail. And in this pursuit, we feel that it is a solitary quest – a trail that leads us to places where we will feel most forlorn, where our very shadow seems to abandon us.

Shall we discontinue then? Shall we say to ourselves, “This is absurd?” Shall we dismiss this strange and wild beating of our hearts and the stirring of our souls as ridiculous, as nothing, as futile? Shall we deny that which is the reason for living, our very means to live, the very reason why we are alive at all?

For always we hear this call, this song that tells us to jump overboard, to follow it. In the steady rhythm of life, we feel it beating, giving our lives a cadence that allows us to live in our own unique melody, that grants us to live an authentic life.

We are captivated by the quest for meaning for our own existence. We are moved to make something of what we have, for we do not live in vain, for are not just consumed by an existential despair that find absurdity in all.

they look at us and they tell us, by their words or by that sad look in their eyes, how wasted our lives are by using our talents and consuming our energies in thankless causes. why we choose paths that are so different from theirs that we cannot possibly be happy.

it feels good to know that there are others who hear the song too.
