An Anatomy of Theological Method

Edward Farley has this to say: "But when the elements of theological reflection come into view, we realize immediately that there is no single, definitive procedure waiting to be discovered...Failing to discover the treasure, many students of theology abandon the field for quasi-theological activities of polemic, book-reading, reporting on the theological scene, and technical scholarly projects." Edward Farley, Ecclesial Reflection: An Anatomy of Theological Method, Fortress Press, 1982

we sometimes get so caught in the process that we forget that the object of theology is more important. theology is more than just the method. It is the search for the apprehension of the living, changing reality of faith, our experience and the Divine. to be caught up in method alone is to be caught up, as gilbert would say, in the "absurdity of a pseudo-authoritarian ramblings and mumblings."
