When the Witch demanded payment for the betrayal of Edmund in C.S. Lewis's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, she invoked deep magic from the dawn of time. In this magic, retribution is only a fair payment for any act committed against anyone, be it betrayal, rebellion, or raising an angry fist towards a benevolent Source. Exact and unmerciful, what is owed is what must be paid. "You know that every traitor belongs to me as my lawful prey, and that for every treachery I have a right to a kill," the Witch demanded. Aslan the magnificent and yet enigmatic lion, gave his life as payment as he was killed at the Stone Table. And the witch celebrated in triumph, or so she thought.
At the dawn of the new day, Aslan rose to life once more. Lucy and Susan celebrate the wondrous fact that Aslan is alive again. Aslan explains what has happened. "It means that though the Witch knew the Deep Magic, there is a magic deeper still which she did not know. Her knowledge goes back only to the dawn of time. But if she could have looked a little further back, into the stillness and the darkness before Time dawned, she would have read there a different incantation. She would have known that when a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor's stead, the Table would crack, and Death itself would start working backwards..."
Christ arrives right on time to make this happened. He didn't and doesn't wait for us to get ready. He presented Himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything...But God put his love on the line for us by offering His Son in sacrificial death while we were of no use whatever to Him...We sing and shout our praises to God through Jesus, the Messiah! Romans 5:8-11 (The Message)
January 8...Narnia Magic comes to town...can't hardly wait!
